Super Hot Cocoa (dairy-free, vegan)

Super Hot Cocoa (vegan, dairy-free) via Food by Mars

Holy-moly! I think I just made the best cup of vegan hot cocoa I’ve ever had. Allow me to explain, this nearly sedated me it was so dreamy. Except for when that maca kicks in, that’ll open your eyes! That’s why I’ve dubbed this SUPER hot cocoa. That, AND because I used my milk frother for this and if you don’t have a frothier, you must get one! STAT. It makes those packaged marshmallows look laughable (in case you weren’t already laughing at those). This cup of chocolate will soothe you on a cold day and kill a chocolate craving like nothing else.

Back to the maca part… I sneak a teaspoon of maca into my smoothies all the time and this time it found it’s way in here (don’t confuse this with matcha, they’re different!). If you haven’t tried it, it gives a slight caramel-malt like taste. The maca root powder is an amazing superfood that is so healthy for so much like: hair, skin, nails, hormonal-balance… and ENERGY. So if you make this at night, maybe skip or use half the dose 😉 Also, I use raw cacao powder which has TONS of antioxidants, so if you can find it raw, that’s the best way to go over processed which has less of the good stuff you want to slurp up. But of course, unsweetened, dark cocoa powder is wonderful too!

And a word about milk frothers: I use this one, but also have this kind which is a cheap alternative that does a great job as well. If all else fails, throw the almond or coconut milk (which all froth well) into a blender for a while.

You’ve gotta make this… the creamy, puffy magic in a mug is calling your name.

Can you hear it??! Cheers. XO

Ingredients

serves 2

  • 1 1/2 cup coconut milk (to froth) or The New Barn Almond Milks work well too!
  • 4 tbsp any non-dairy milk
  • 4 tbsp raw cacao powder or cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp maca powder (omit if drinking before bed, it may keep you awake!)

Directions

  1. Using a frothier preferably, or blender, froth the soy milk (this will take a couple of minutes while you prep the chocolate).
  2. In a small saucepan over low heat, add the 4 tbsp of milk, cocoa powder, syrup, cinnamon, and vanilla.
  3. Whisk constantly, until a thick chocolate milk forms (you may see a slight skin form on top). Lastly, whisk in the maca powder until fully distributed.
  4. Once the soy milk is frothed, turn the heat off your hot chocolate and pour the frothed milk into the saucepan and whisk lightly until the hot cocoa is a light brown and mixed. Serve!

  1. WOwow wow!! I’m so inspired Alison! This is a cup of superfood my dear! Now, I’ve got the raw cacao, but I’ve yet to get maca. It’s just not on my radar… and then you remind me to get it. Also, it is how you described the flavor that flipped my switch! I’ll take it! I’ve been drinking cashew milk and am in love… so perhaps I’ll grab some maca and give this a go! Thank you Alison! 😀

  2. I just got a milk frother her last week and my life had changed for the better!! Just in time to make this super hot cocoa!!

  3. Maca and chocolate are a match made in heaven! I can’t resist the temptation of ordering this combo whenever I come across it at my favourite cafe. I actually just picked up a frother a few weeks ago and somehow forgot about it – I need to find it and make this asap! xo

  4. Definitely will make this tomorrow. Just two tiny problems: I only have lucuma, which will do too I guess, and I lost my frother. Cannot find it anywhere aargh! Also thanks lovely for including my granola in your recent post. I was really happy about that! xo!

    • Ahh I haven’t yet tried lucuma! How does it taste? I hope you find your frother soon, I cannot live without mine! Happy to use your gorgeous recipes <3
