My Every day Safer Skincare

favorite safer skincare products

Over the past year+, I’ve been slowly but surely replacing and experimenting with safer skincare. As someone with highly SENSITIVE skin… (hello, hives and breakouts for the dumbest reasons), I was slightly mortified at the thought of switching out the products that were working “well” for me (as in, not making me break out). That said, I knew my former products had questionable ingredients and also know that if I’m investing the time and care to eat well, what my skin is essentially “eating” is also very important! I’m sharing some of my every day safer skincare baesics (yes I did mean to spell it that way LOL)… BECAUSE I LOVE THEM and highly recommend them. I’d also like to share more about how I went about replacing my beloved, albeit, toxic products without having a skin freak out and without going broke.

How to phase out the old, questionable products

Firstly, DON’T feel like you have to or that you should switch it all out overnight. Not only is that a big risk (what if you HATE it all?), and a strain on the wallet, but when you change everything so quickly on your skin… it might a) cause a reaction like a breakout or rash, and b) if only one of the items is a real sensitivity or allergy for you, how will you know which one it was?  Go slow.

Secondly, be careful with marketing and picky about where you spend your money. Companies know that “non-toxic”, “natural”, “healthy”, “plant-based”, and whatever another phrase of the like IS SO HOT RIGHT NOW. They’ll slap a green leaf label on anything and have you thinking you need not worry or look elsewhere, but sadly that’s misguided. We still need to be educated consumers when it comes to what we buy and put on or in our bodies. If that annoys you, you’re not alone. This is why I like to research brands as well as products. If I find a brand with a strong company mission and great personal founder story as to why they started the company that aligns with my mission – you’ve got my full attention and ultimately, a certain level of trust with products. A couple of examples …

Beautycounter – their woman founder (hi, I’m already interested lol)… is in this for all the right reasons, and you can read more about that here. She has turned her high expectations for products into her company mission and quality assurance and if a product doesn’t fit the bill anymore because some new study came out about an ingredient used… it’s good-bye, re-called and re-created.

Primally Pure is such a minimalistic yet powerful brand! I just love how little ingredients are used and how well their products work. Also women-owned!

Saje Wellness‘ founder also had a huge “why” and reason to use plants to heal… and has made some beautiful products in the form of essential oils and skincare that I love. Their Peppermint Halo product for headaches IS MY EVERYTHING.

Thirdly, my tip to stay educated on products would be to use the EWG app. I use this for food (mainly the Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen resources) and for the products. The app helps to rate the product based on the ingredients and helps you make an informed decision.

My last tip is to do all the other things a smart consumer does! Read reviews, talk to friends, and as you run out of your old stuff, do your research on a safer replacement to try! Give it a few days and stagger too many new products so you can keep track of any reactions you might have.

My Favorite Every Day Safer Skincare Products

Beautycounter Faves:

  • Countermatch Collection – This is PERFECT for my sensitive skin. I used to use products like Cetaphil because it was “plain” and fragrance-free (I am so picky about smells on my face… I don’t love it and like I said, tend to break out from fragrances). This stuff is very plain and mild.
  • Charcoal Cleansing Bar – I love using this in conjunction with the Cleansing Milk in the Countermatch Collection, it’s great to help with exfoliation and blemishes. This is one of the most popular Beautycounter products.
  • No. 3 Balancing Facial Mask – This clay mask is my weekly fave! It’s amazing to help detox blemishes.
  • No. 1 Brightening Facial Oil – I love using this after the clay mask! It smells like oranges (I’m cool with this scent… it’s so natural and isn’t strong), it doesn’t clog my pores at all and feels so silky smooth to calm the skin down after the detoxing from the charcoal.
  • Cleansing Balm – This stuff is honestly, luxurious. I’ve been testing this out as my night-time cleanser. It comes with an applicator and melts onto your face, you wipe it off with a cloth and it is super moisturizing!
Friday Night Life!

Saje Wellness Faves:

  • Bare Face Makeup Remover – It works so well, is so gentle, and non-irritating!
  • Stress Release Oil – I tend to carry tension in my shoulders, so when I’m feeling neck or shoulder pain, I roll this stuff on and it seriously melts it away.
  • Peppermint Halo – If you get headaches, this is your new best friend. The second I feel one coming on, I roll it on my head, temples, and back of my neck and nothing works faster or better in soothing my headache and sometimes stopping it dead in its tracks. Must have!

Amazon Faves:

  • Rosewater Spray – It’s a great toner, general pick-me-up, after-sun spray, and post shaving spray.
  • Everyday Coconut Spray – Another great toner for the skin and smells like coconut.
  • Jade Face Roller – This is great for circulation in the face, plus it just feels amazing because it’s a free self-face massage! I like to use this in conjunction with the No. 1 Brightening Facial Oil.
  • Dry Brush – Keep your lymphatic system moving to keep toxins moving out of your body, I LOVE dry brushing! You can read more about how to do that here.
  • pHresh Deodorant – Again with that sensitive skin… baking soda which is a common ingredient in natural deodorants is a big no-no for me, I break out and my skin feels like it’s on fire! This product has 0 baking soda and smells amazing, highly recommend it.

Primally Pure Faves:

  • Flower Bath – Love to use this on self-care day, it’s like an at-home spa treatment! To not use it all up and get a good amount of magnesium in the bath (to help relax me, ease any joint or muscle pain and generally get my magnesium in), I add a bit of this for the scent and natural oils with this big ol’ bag of Epsom salt.
  • Deodorant – It does have a bit of baking soda, but it actually doesn’t bother me and holds so well. I have two favorite deodorants listed here and I like to switch them up (I get sick of scents pretty quickly hahaha).
  • Lip Balm – Hands down, my favorite lip balm! The flavors are delicious and the ingredients are minimal.
  • Blue Tansy Body Oil – While I love lotion/cream, after trying this oil… I kind of prefer it! I can’t explain it, but it feels like it evens out my skin and just glides on much easier. The scent relaxes me and it seems to hydrate me so much more!
