Favorite Green Smoothie

Today I’m sharing my favorite green smoothie, and I do hope you try it! It’s my go-to cure all that makes me feel so good in the morning, energized and satisfied so I’m ready to take on the day! I chose the ingredients based on energizing and hormone balancing ingredients.

Spinach

  • (for zinc): Building blocks for healthy hormones, immune system, and clear skin just to name a few.
  • (for vitamin A): Think “A” for adrenals as this plays a part in maintaining the adrenal gland and thyroid.
  • (for iron): Iron deficiency is very common amongst women especially and is correlated to thyroid issues (such as hypo- and hyperthyroidism), low energy, anemia and more.

Maca – mineral-rich in iron, magnesium, calcium and more. It can improve hormone balance, increases energy, libido, fertility (balances estrogen & progesterone), reduces stress, helps to ease menopause symptoms. If you have any conditions such as PCOS or hypo/hyperthyroidism, you should read more about it to determine how often might be right for you.

Spirulina – extremely high in protein (more than many meats) and vitamins, this potent and nutrient-rich algae helps with so much: blood sugar balance, inflammation, menstrual symptoms, mood swings, healthy weight maintenance and more. It’s also great to take after a night out to help you get back on track!

Almond Milk & Butter – rich in vitamin E, this keeps your skin looking clear and can help protect from sun damage as well.

Cinnamon – not only is delicious, but it has many healing properties! It can help reduce insulin resistance (very helpful for anyone with or predisposed to diabetes and anyone with PCOS), reduces blood pressure, bad cholesterol, improves blood circulation and acts as an antimicrobial (use it as a face mask for acne treatments!).

Brazil Nuts – high in selenium! This is important for thyroid health especially.

Banana – for sweetness and texture, yes but also for energy! This fruit isn’t the lowest on the glycemic index, so paired with the fat from almonds and coconut oil, it will help slow down the possibility of a high sugar spike. I’m also only using half a banana to keep it in check and it tastes so delicious!! Also, for variation, I’ll freeze blueberries and use in place which is high in antioxidants and low in fructose as well as a lower glycemic fruit. Why take sugars into account when balancing hormones? Because keeping your blood sugar stable is key in doing so!

Ingredients

  • handful of spinach
  • 1 tsp maca powder
  • 1 tsp coconut oil
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp spirulina
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 brazil nut
  • 2 tsp almond butter
  • 1/2 frozen banana or 1/4 cup blueberries
  • optional add-ins: collagen or psyllium husk for more fiber (add more water in case)

Directions

  1. Blend all ingredients in a powerful blender until well combined and serve immediately. Enjoy!

  1. This is my new favorite breakfast! It tastes great, gives me so much energy, and I know I can count on the zinc and maca powder to help my skin.

    Thanks for sharing!

  2. I start every day with a green smoothie and I love all that you’ve included in your recipe. But I’ve yet to try maca. I didn’t know about its hormone balancing properties … I neeeed that! 😀 I just starting using spirulina and love it’s vibrant color! Delicious work Alison!
