Seasonal Produce Guide for Spring

Why eat seasonal food? There are many reasons! But to name a few of the best: better taste, more nutrients, variety, more cost-effective. On top of that, try eating local and organic produce when you can (keep this list on you while shopping: dirty dozen). Reasons for that include: more nutritional value (the longer something is sitting on a truck… the less fresh and nutritional it will be), the limitation of GMOs and pesticides you’re ingesting as well as reducing your carbon footprint… not to mention, in doing so, you are hopefully supporting local farms! I also believe that certain seasonal produce is not just in season due to the weather conditions… but because that’s what our body needs at this time. As an example, I suffer from allergies in the spring (mainly from dust!) and eating citrus every morning is super helpful in keeping my immune system up with the additional vitamin C.

Below is your shopping list! Happy shopping, cooking, and eating… oh and, HAPPY SPRING! Recipes to come featuring some of these ingredients…

  1. Girl this list is so great and helpful!! It’s nice to have a handy guide of what’s in season. As soon as it starts getting nicer out I can’t wait to start hitting all of the markets in the city! As always, you’re photography is amazing.

  2. Thank you for this, Alison! I’m looking forward to fresh asparagus and artichokes…. and of course all the fresh herbs! I grow them in pots and it’s so nice to walk right outside of my kitchen and snip them right when I need em’. It makes all my meals even better! Also, my CSA starts up next month as well as local farmers markets! They help me stay on track with seasonal eating. Love your photography in this post!
